Mayhem in the Music Ministry

While the music ministry may provide an excellent way for believers to worship God together, it certainly also comes with its own plethora of challenges. Some disgruntled members may bicker about what songs should be sung while others complain about the length of choir practice. Still, others will chide about some instruments being too loud and more will pout about not getting a solo opportunity or offertory debut. So, how does one handle the challenges of the music ministry while maintaining a godly attitude and continuing to see a great vision for the work?

Here are some foundational problems that will arise in every music ministry regardless of the size of the work.

  • Disunity: This problem will manifest as an ugly beast of discontentment arousing the fleshly hurtful words and actions of those involved. What a dark spot to have on the church of Christ when the brethren choose not to dwell in unity! This challenge is often the result of a lack of understanding of the purpose and vision of the task at hand (or simply the Christian thwarting the leading of the Spirit in every area of their life).

  • How to overcome disunity: Whether you are the leader or not, maintain an attitude of consideration. Consider the needs and wants of others before your own. Consider the cause of Christ and the life purpose of every believer. (If the leader) consider if your plan of operation and adherence to Biblical standards are clearly understood. (If not the leader) consider the leader’s vision and try to understand it. And most importantly, consider the leading of the Holy Spirit.

  • Desire for self-glory: this problem arises at the hands of selfish individuals who seek to glorify themselves and the talents they think they may possess. They perceive the church as an opportunity to display their own ambitions and abilities while robbing God of His greatly deserved glory. They seek to put others down while trying to lift themselves up.

  • How to overcome the desire for self-glory: Lift high the name of Christ. Cultivate an attitude and practice of glorifying God through song and selfless service. Provide as many people as possible with equal musical opportunities.

  • Difference of taste in musical styles: With a wide range of acceptable styles within godly music, there will be no shortage of disagreements on what should be performed. Some will prefer the majesty of a full orchestra coupled with a vast sea of choral voices, but others would choose the simple nature of Western or folk music. Some will lean towards slow and emotionally deep music while others choose music brimming with energy.

  • How to overcome musical differences: Overcoming differences in musical taste within a church music group requires a spirit of humility from each participant and a willingness to embrace someone else's preference. Prioritizing the needs of the congregation as a whole, and desiring to glorify the name of God rather than individual preferences, is essential. This might involve incorporating a variety of musical styles throughout the year, perhaps through special services or themed programs. Cultivating a spirit of appreciation for varying musical expressions can foster a more inclusive and enriching musical experience for all.

When believers approach their musical service with a genuine desire to worship God and edify others, the music ministry becomes a glorious and meaningful expression of faith, bringing joy, unity, and spiritual growth to the entire church body.
