Do you ever stop to think about your impact in the music ministry? Do you ever question whether your hard work is paying off or making a lasting difference? Are your hours of preparation and sacrifice furthering the Kingdom of God? These are all common emotional questions that many people ask themselves, and you are not wrong to also consider these questions. In fact, it is good to take time to reflect on the work that you are doing and weigh it in the balance of God’s Word to keep your priorities in proper order. As people, we choose to place value on every activity in our lives by choosing how much time we spend on each activity. If you want to see success in your music ministry, you will first need to understand the value and importance the Word of God places on music.

With over 500 references in the Word of God relating to music, Scripture clearly demonstrates the importance of music. If you would like to see success in your music endeavors, you will need to see your music ministry with the level of value that God sees it having. Here are some valuable aspects of music to consider.

  • Creation itself was welcomed with singing by the angels. Job 38:7 says, “When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?”. This is a clear example of the works of God being praised by song even from the beginning of time. The greatest work we have to praise God for today in the church is His work of making mankind into “a new creature” at salvation. What better reason to sing than the rescuing of lost souls!

  • One glorious day, all of nature will sing together the praises of the Most High. Isaiah 55:12b “...the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.” We are to be light and salt to the lost world around us and what better way to shine the light of truth than to show the world that believers have an everlasting reason to sing. Our King will soon be returning and all of nature will bow at His feet. What a spectacular opportunity we have already to give reverence to our King through song!

  • Let’s not overlook the fact that there is an entire collection of inspired songs preserved for us in the Bible. The book of Psalms records for us the ebbs and flows, the ups and downs, the victories and defeats of King David and others throughout their lives, and they were recorded in song and poem form. The book of Song of Solomon is a song about the love of a young king and his unlikely bride. It shows Christ’s love for His bride and demonstrates how our love for Christ (our Groom) should be all-consuming.

  • Singing is a form of encouragement to the believer helping him yield to the Holy Spirit and evade temptation. Ephesians 5:18-21 reads, “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” If you notice, these four verses are all joined by semicolons showing that the thought continues through all four verses. The acts of being filled, giving thanks, and getting along are all aided by godly music. Colossians 3:16 commands us to, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”. Christian unity and spiritual growth are greatly impacted by our music. Godly music is a powerful tool that should always be at the ready for every believer.

The Bible's numerous references to music, underscore its profound significance within the Christian faith. From the dawn of creation to the eternal harmonies of heaven, music plays a vital role in our worship, our fellowship, and our witness to the world. By embracing the value God places on music, we can transform our musical ministries into a powerful tool of spiritual growth, encouragement, and outreach, bringing glory to our Creator and enriching the lives of those around us.
